Cut-out art.

Cutouts
The other night at the art show, somebody had some cut-out art, where they cut out shapes from photographs and placed other photographs underneath. I've seen similar things before, but I don't see a lot of cut-out art around here usually so it inspired me! I fell in love with the technique. I made some simple cut-outs all from one magazine! I think they are so funky looking. :)

DIY: Business Coins

Do it yourself: Business coins
Not being able to afford any business cards, I took matters into my own hands. These are made out of pennies, although any other coins will probably do (I like to keep my silver!) - and I call them business coins. I brought them to the art event last night and a lot of people loved them! It made me so happy. On one side is a design, and on the other, your information. This won't work if you want to share a lot of information - unless you use QR code!

Here are some designs I came up with:
Make some yourself:

STEP 1: Find a penny! Canadian pennies work great. ;) You will also need paint (I used acrylic), paint brushes, and clear nail polish.
STEP 2: Paint your penny! Start with a base colour. You might need 2 coats. Once that dries, paint whichever desgins and information you desire - if your paint brush isn't thin enough, cut it thinner with scissors.
STEP 3: Coat your penny! I used clear nail polish becuase it's fabulous. This way, your paint won't rub off as easily - and it gives it a nice gloss.
Now you can hand them out! They won't get destroyed as easily as paper cards, and if you ever need your pennies back, nail polish remover will do the trick. I love the outer space designs the most - I'm going to stick to those.
I hope you've enjoyed this idea, and thanks for reading. :)

Edit: January 29, 2012

I slightly changed the style of my business coins. I'm sticking to the space theme for now. Instead of painting on my website link, I glued on printed text, which looks neater. I also added a visible bronze border by scraping off paint along the edges. I think these have a whole different feel to them!

Green Cup!

Tonight there was an awesome art event at Green Cup! It was pretty eventful. I had a small display of my photography up as well. It was fun getting a few compliments, meeting new people, and seeing some great art & performances.

My favourite performances were songs by Courtney Lynn, and poetry slam by Matt Miller.

I feel inspired after tonight. Looking forward to a repeat!

GET THIS LOOK!

This post is a remake of a post I made last year. This is a little idea I came up with. Stylish glasses frames wrapped with thread! They aren't very hard to make, but could be time-consuming. I get a lot of compliments while wearing these out. It's fun! Here are the steps!

STEP 1: Get a pair of glasses with a frame shape that you like. Make sure the lenses can pop out! Mine cost me $1. In this case, I used thread that is thicker and is often called floss/embroidery thread. Find it at the dollar store!

STEP 2: Depending on your desired pattern, start at a comfortable spot by tying one knot. Try to wrap around the knot as well, that way it won't come undone.

STEP 3: When changing colours, you can either tie a knot or leave a loose end (like I did in step 2) and secure it by wrapping the new thread over it.

STEP 4: Don't worry about threads sticking out if you'll be wrapping over them anyways. You can finish off using double knots and hide the knots on the back of the frame. If that doesn't hold, add a dab of glue.

Voila! We're finished.
I think I rock them better than my siser:

Thanks for reading! If you make these, link me and I will post your creation here! OR if you're interested in purchasing a special pair designed by yours truly, let me know. Take care!

Real life portal.

So, being a big fan of the video game Portal, I decided that I need to be in a real life Portal photo! How do I look?
